Support Independent Music and Radio

posted by Mark on Jan 1, 2009

Most people don’t pay much attention to the radio outside of their vehicles. And for good reason. Radio is dominated by large corporations that have little interest in anything other than collecting the large quantities of advertising dollars. This doesn’t leave much in the way of quality for the discriminating music connoisseur.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t any good radio out there. Even in the Sacramento valley, we have multiple stations run by people who care about music. Radio stations that require their DJs to personally select the music they play on the air. Below is a brief list of these stations, shows and the DJs who make them great. The Bottom Dwellers encourage you to tune in and hear for yourself.

KDVS 90.3 FM, Davis

Cool As Folk, hosted by Michael Leahy, airs every Friday from 6PM to 8PM and features a sweet mix of folk, bluegrass, old time, country, string bands, and indie music. He frequently has artists perform in studio and he also books shows in the area.

The Saturday Morning Folk Show, hosted by Bill Wagman and Robyne Fawx (who take turns alternating every other weekend), airs every Saturday from 9AM to 12PM. This show focuses on more traditional folk, bluegrass, celtic and americana. They also host in-studio performances by local and touring artists.

KVMR 89.9 FM, Nevada City

County Line Bluegrass, hosted by Eric Rice, airs every Saturday morning from 10AM to 12PM. This is the only bluegrass show in the area, so it tries to explore all facets of the genera. There is something for everyone. KVMR also broadcasts the Grass Valley Father’s day festival every year.

Hard Country, hosted by Rick and Audra Snelson, alternates with Ragged But Right, hosted by Thomas Greener every Saturday from 12 PM to 2 PM. These shows make up some of the best radio on the air. Both feature a wide range of real country music and americana.

KXJZ 90.9 FM, Sacramento

Blue Dog Jam, hosted by Chris Oshiro, airs every Saturday from 7PM to 10PM. KXJZ isn’t just jazz and NPR! This show plays an incredibly wide selection of music. Really great stuff you don’t usually hear from well known artists, indie artists, and local artists. This show is one of my long time personal favorites. Maybe because they play lots of Bottom Dwellers ... But probably because Mercury Rev + Tim Bluhm + Of Montreal + Hank III = a really exciting way to fill up your room with sound.

The Bottom Dwellers strongly urge you to check these shows out. There is great music on the radio, and some great people who really know what their doing who play it for you. Also remember that they rely on your contributions to stay on the air. If you like what you hear, chip in some dough! The stations answer to YOU!

The Bottom Dwellers also want to express our grattitude to these sations and to these DJs specifically for supporting us through the years. The music you play inspires us, and we enjoy telling our friends about it.

Now go free up a few pre-sets on your radio!
